Overview of Val D Orcia
Val D’Orcia is situated in the south of Tuscany and is an agricultural area bordering the neighbouring region of Lazio.
Valdorcia’s landscape is formed by a soft everlasting rolling hills with a wonderful diversify of torrents, ravines, rocky outcrops, river banks which are interlaced until loosing in the ash-coloured of the far-off “Crete”. However, this scenery changes when you arrive to the majestic Monte Amiata, a superb mountain with pretty rich vegetation and abounding with springs of crystal waters.
This agricultural area developed when it was included in the city-state Siena’s territory during the 14th and 15th centuries, in order to be a sign of an ideal representation of good governance producing an aesthetically agreeable natural picture.
All the structures which were built-up along this area, once traversed by the ancient roads of Rome -The Francigena - like abbeys, inns, temples and bridges created a landscape which was particularly celebrated by the great Renaissance Siennese’s painters, as well as by the romantic writers who were coming from England, France o Germany.
