We would like to devote an article to this passionate and peculiar figure who, in spite of being not born in Florence, got his own empire in this town where his company's headquarters lies.
Salvatore was born in Bonito, a southern Italian town in 1898, and was the eleventh of fourteen children.
When very young, he learnt shoemaking. His love for shoes took him to Naples where he inaugurated a little shop in his parents' house.
In 1914 Ferragamo emigrated to the USA, first to Boston and then California where he started to tailor make shoes for several figures of the film industry.
He returned to Italy in 1927, but this time to Florence where he started building his empire in 1950 employing over 700 artisans who were able to make 350 pair of shoes per day.
Salvatore made shoes for many famous people from Eva Peron to Marilyn Monroe and is regarded as a precursor of the Italian fashion. He died in 1960 at 62 bequeathing an empire to his children who nowadays manage from Florence the fashion business and many other luxury hotels and apartments in Italy and worldwide.
