Overview of Torrita di Siena

Torrita di Siena is a medieval town in Sienna’s province situated on a charming hill on the west side of Val di Chiana, outside from de main touristy routes.

Etruscan and Roman settlements have been found in its municipal territory area, bringing to light its ancient origins. However, its first historical records are coming back from the 11th century when the fortress was under the possession of Abbey Sant’Antimo.
In the 13th century it was under the dependence of the Counts of Scialenga.
In the same century, the struggles between Montepulciano and Sienna’s Republic in order to control the fortress, made Sienna to send a Podestà, taking Torrita under its jurisdiction. But, between 1276 and 1279, the heroic knight Ghino di Tacco, member of the local aristocratic family Cacciaconti Monacheschi Pecorai, fought with his loyal troops against Sienna’s invasion in order to bring into independence his birth town.
After a tough and long persecution Sienna’s authorities captured him, being executed in the Main Square of Sienna in 1285.
In the 14th century Torrita was conquered for a brief time by Deo Tolomei. In the following years Sienna’s Republic reaffirmed absolutely its dominion and rebuilt the fortress and its surrounding walls, which today can still be distinguished.

Nowadays, Torrita di Siena with its pretty preserved historical centre has transformed its traditional agricultural economy into a flourishing industry becoming a prosperous locality.
Its main momument is the Church of Ss. Flora e Lucilla , built up between the13th and the14th century. It hosts several art works. The most important one is Il Sangue del Redentore” attributed to Donatello.
