Museo - Casa di Dante
The Museo - Casa di Dante is located in the hub of the medieval Florence, in Via Santa Margherita, 1.
In 1910, on commission of the respective Florentine authorities, the renowned architect Giuseppe Castelluci designed the reconstruction of a tower house from the 13th century to host a didactic museum devoted to Dante Alighieri.
According to the opinion of the medievalists who at that time were consulted about it, the remnants of the ancient structure were situated in the neighbourhood of the birth house of Dante.
The building is divided into a ground floor and three upper floors. The ground floor has been fitted up to house art showings.
The Museo – Casa di Dante is set up on the three upper floors:
The first floor holds an exhibition of documents relating to the childhood and youth of Dante, as well as maps, drawings and objects representing several features of the medieval Florence and also the main historical events which took place in the present capital city of Tuscany during the second half of the 13th century.
On the second floor there are displayed an ample series of documents referred to the sentence of banishment of Dante (1301) and his afflicted exile from Florence, which went on until his death in Ravenna, in1321.
The third floor hosts a collection of documents relating to the mature years of Dante and replicas of famous paintings representing the poet and different episodes of his life. Those copies come from the original ones created by illustrious artists like: Giotto, Andrea del Castagno, Beato Angelico, Domenico and Andrea Ghirlandaio, Luca Signorelli and Raffaello.
The Museum has a fine bookshop to purchase some of the works written by Dante Alighieri along his life. They are available in vernacular language or translated into different languages.
