Monteriggioni - First two weekends in July

Medieval Festival

MONTERIGGIONI DI TORRI SI CORONA

From July 4th to 6th and from July 11th to 13th, 2008 the marvelous town castle of Monteriggioni - Siena goes back to the Middle Ages with the Monteriggioni di Torri si Corona Medieval Festival .

This is an event to live first hand. The revival of the historical event connected to the festival is intriguing. You will admire the soldiers' encampment, sentries on the walls and war machines, battles and duels to render "The siege of 1526" alive. The detail of costumes and the spectacular performance of professional duelers battling with real iron weapons based on the designs from documents brought to us from the days of the siege make it very enjoyable.

Upon entrance you will be asked to exchange your euros with Fiorini, the money that was in use at the time of the siege, and the only currency accepted by "medieval" merchants. The castle is filled with stalls and shops of craftsmen and merchants, along with jesters, townsfolk and jugglers' shows, street artists and concerts with real antique instruments. Tuscany offers a long tradition of masters rediscovering musical instruments that were crafted during the middle ages, and here you will hear their sound played loyally.

The festival has come to its eighteenth edition. Along these years the festival has been greatly improved and each year the show becomes more intriguing. This year the show will be brought outside the walls of the castle for the first time. You will be greeted by nights fighting along the walls of the town, brought along the magical trail that connects Monteriggioni to the Badia Isola abbey under the guide of an indigenous monk who knows all the magical spots along the trail and their significance. You will be able to witness open field battles in first person, and admire the special effects showing the devastating effects of the fire that destroyed the castle. The walls of the castle will be your safe harbor, where a typical medieval fair day will be reenacted.

Opening Hours: from 6 p.m. until late night
