Events and Concerts in Tuscany in August
There are multiple and varied events that will take place in Tuscany throughout August, a festive month in which many of the Tuscan towns celebrate some popular events, festivals, concerts or gastronomic gathering in which whatever the itinerary chosen to travel around the region it will be easy to enjoy some of the popular celebrations in Tuscany.
Among the organized celebrations in August we would like to highlight two of the most important cultural events in the following weeks, and we will provide details in articles dedicated exclusively to both celebrations.
1.- The Tuscan Sun Festival that takes place in Cortona from 3rd to 9th August makes one of the most important cultural festivals in Italy. The beautiful Cortona is in these days a must visit for all those who are in the area.
2.- The Teatro Povero di Monticchiello, an attractive and interesting number of performances of popular origins in which the inhabitants of town are the protagonists of their own plays that for over fifteen days they perform in the main square of town.
On 16th August the second Palio of Siena will be held, il Palio dell’Assumpta. For all those who are in Tuscany in these days, it is a unique chance to relish an unrepeatable event and a festive city in which entertainment, music, good food and the best wine are guaranteed. Next 2nd August the 2009 edition of Trasimeno Blues ends with the legendary guitar player Robben Ford on stage who will be in charge of ending a new edition of this celebrated Blues Festival that fills with good music the beautiful town Città della Pieve (a few kilometres away from Tuscany). Virtuoso guitarists have participated once again in this festival dedicated to Blues’ lovers in one of the most beautiful towns in Umbria..
The 55 Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, in the province of Lucca offers the most meaningful operas of the Tuscan composer. The recently inaugurated theatre Torre del Lago, the inspiring spot for some of the most celebrated operas of the composer of Lucca will be the backcloth for some of his most famous operas in a magical and seductive setting.
On 15th August la Giostra del Saracino is celebrated in Sarteano in the province of Siena. It is an antique celebration that the town has kept for centuries that commemorates the struggle of knights against the Arab power ( represented by the Saracen) that for centuries terrified the Christian towns and villages. The Saracen is represented by a wooden statue placed on a revolving support. It is a colourful picturesque and full-of-fun historic celebration that each year gathers a great number of visitors attracted by this game among the neighbourhoods of the towns and villages.
On Saturday 15th August the Palio Marinaro dell’Assumpta will be held in Castiglione della Pescaia in Grossetto. At 5 pm on Saturday 15th the parade of sbandieratori will depart from Piazza Garibaldi. They will fill the streets of this beautiful seaside town with juggling, multicolour flags and guide visitors as far as the starting point of the Palio due at 6.30 pm
From 16th to 23rd August the precious Volterra will play host to a splendid medieval festival with perfect re-enacting of the life in the Middle Ages in all its aspects.
